When I was enrolled at the University of Montana, I was exposed to lots of conspiracy theories. I don’t know if Montana is a breeding ground for conspiracy theories, but I heard all kinds from different subcultures.
There were the hippies, who were obsessed with chemtrails- this is where airplanes emit chemicals that influence the weather or make people sterile and other shit. They often pestered my friend at Walmart, looking for the best video camera to record them.
The fundamentalist Christians believed in whacky shit- like the government having hydraulic guillotines hidden away. When the time came, government storm troopers of the Anti Christ were going to use the guillotines to behead them.
My neighbor clung to a couple wild conspiracy theories- He believed the government had an electronic harp they would take up in an airplane. When the time came, agents would play the harp, and the right notes would cause the population to go crazy. This would justify the government declaring martial law and sending in the national guard.
Another theory he had involved Spec Ops, who under the cover of night infiltrated Missoula. These soldiers allegedly took up positions in the City Council, waiting for the right time to declare martial law as well and let the national guard in.
At any rate, all the crazy conspiracy shit I hear today would fit right in with Montana subcultures- microchips in vaccines, democrats using a weather machine to disrupt voting, Jewish space lasers, etc. I find the theories amusing, but I suppose there’s a danger with them- like RFK not encouraging parents to get their kids a measles vaccine.
